Heigl is blunt; Hollywood is irked

By Erin Carlson Associated Press

NEW YORK — When Katherine Heigl opens her mouth, people listen. They don't always like what they hear.

Fast-forward filmmaking

By Josh Kegley jkegley@herald-leader.com

LOUISVILLE — It's 6:17 p.m. on July 18, and about 100 eager filmmakers, bustling with excitement and hyped on coffee and energy drinks, are packed in a small room. They know that sleep will be a valuable commodity this weekend.

'Brideshead Revisited': Excellent class, casting

By Roger Moore The Orlando Sentinel

Brideshead Revisited — Evelyn Waugh's biting British novel of class, Catholicism, guilt and betrayal — earns a well-cast, beautifully mounted big-screen adaptation that, while it won't make fans forget the hit PBS miniseries version from the 1980s, at least manages to tell the same drawn-out tale with brisk frankness.

Latest 'Mummy' relies on cheese instead of fun

By Roger Moore The Orlando Sentinel

>Three Mummy movies worth of cheese, and not one of them is set in Wisconsin.

And in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, that cheese has curdled into the dumbest, most violent Mummy yet.

'Swing Vote': Political power

By Roger Moore The Orlando Sentinel

Will complacent Americans who don't vote show up for a comic civics lesson about that complacency?

If they miss Swing Vote, they'll miss a feel-good film that, at its best, is ”fair and balanced“ and funny. And if they don't vote? We all know the consequences of that.

'Step Brothers': Silly, but successful

By Roger Moore The Orlando Sentinel

We all know the spoiled brat down the street — the teasing, the taunting, the tantrums, the tears, all coming from a kid so overindulged he or she rules his or her household. They exaggerate and lie, say whatever inappropriate (and profane) thing that pops into their heads, don't share and refuse to play nice. But suppose that brat is 40. Suppose he's a big baby with a potty mouth, infantile obsessions and five o'clock shadow. And that he's still living under your roof.

Believe it: 'X-Files' is back

By David Germain Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — Some Mulder and Scully fans were dubious when the title for the new movie based on their favorite TV show was announced: The X-Files: I Want to Believe.

'The Children of Huang Shi': Orphaned potential

By Roger Moore The Orlando Sentinel

The Children of Huang Shi is a sentimental, old-fashioned and somewhat fictionalized view of World War II in China as seen through the eyes of one Briton who was there. If it doesn't measure up to the label ”epic,“ it's still an engaging account of one man's journey through war and those circumstances that give meaning to the saying, ”Heroes are made, not born.“

'X-Files: I Want to Believe': More procedural than paranormal

By Roger Moore The Orlando Sentinel

The new X-Files movie? Not exactly ”out there.“ The truth is they've taken the spooky, paranormal-minded TV show (1993-2002) and drained much of the ”super“ right out of the supernatural.

"Dark Knight' sets weekend record, $155.34 million

LOS ANGELES — Batman has sent Spidey packing as king of box-office superheroes.

Film drills Big Oil lifeblood of car culture

By Marijke Rowland McClatchy Newspapers

What are two nice Republicans doing making a movie about the sordid state of the oil industry? Actor Scott D. Roberts and his filmmaking partner, Jeremy Wagener are the unlikely men behind the new documentary GasHole. Narrated by The O.C. and American Beauty actor Peter Gallagher, the film chronicles the history of oil prices and alternative fuels. It will screen for one night only at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Village 8 Theater in Louisville. This is its second stop in Louisville; a screening on July 14 sold out.

'Mamma Mia!': An ABBAlanche of silly fun

By Roger Moore The Orlando Sentinel

Mamma Mia! is a pajama party of a musical, a stay-up-too-late, sing-in-front-of-the-mirror, giggle-with-your-girlfriends, worry-about-the-mess-afterwords romp. It gets by on the featherweight golden oldies of ABBA and the treat of seeing and hearing some of cinema's golden oldies break character and belt out a song.

'Space Chimps': Small kids will go ape

By Roger Moore The Orlando Sentinel

If you're old enough to read this review, you aren't the target audience for Space Chimps, a movie about chimpanzees sent in search of intelligent life elsewhere in the universe. Chimps, from the animation studio that gave us Valiant, is more one of those cartoons that parents at least won't mind sitting through while little Miss or Mister 8-and-Under gets his or her chuckles at the cute talking primates.
