GREEN BAY, Wis. . The Lexington Horsemen saw their first season as a member of arenafootball2 come to a close on Friday evening, as they dropped a 65-37 decision to the Green Bay Blizzard. The loss in the Resch Center came in the first round of the af2 playoffs.

The Horsemen (9-8), who became just the second team in af2 history to qualify for the playoffs in their first season as a member of the league, have qualified for post-season play in each season of their existence since the franchise began in 2003.

Lexington quarterback Eddie Eviston finished the game 14-for-23 for 180 yards with three touchdown passes. Two of those scoring strikes went to wide receiver Harry Lewis, who finished the game with 131 receiving yards.

The Blizzard (12-5), the af2 American Conference Midwest Division champions, broke out to a 12-0 lead after former Highlands quarterback Gino Guidugli found receiver Scott Burnoski for a 37-yard touchdown pass that was followed up by a safety and a Bob Forstrom field goal.

MOLINE, Ill. . The Lexington Horsemen rallied from a 12-point halftime deficit Thursday and quarterback Eddie Eviston had a career night, but the Horsemen couldn't complete the comeback, falling to Quad City 81-79 in their regular-season finale.

The Horsemen (9-7), who finished the regular season with two consecutive losses, trailed 47-35 at intermission before coming within two points several times in the game's fourth quarter. Wide receiver Tavon McGee caught a touchdown pass from quarterback Eviston with 31 seconds remaining and kicker Doug Daniel's PAT brought Lexington within two, 81-79.

The Horsemen attempted an onside kick, but Quad City (8-8) recovered the kick at its own 15-yard line and ran out the clock for the victory. The Steamwheelers secured a berth in the upcoming af2 playoffs with the victory, which eliminated the Louisville Fire from post-season play.

Eviston went 34-for-48 for a career-high 378 yards, which surpasses his previous career high of 331 yards. Eviston had seven touchdown passes. He tossed nine scoring strikes against Quad City in the first meeting between the two teams on May 25.

On the one hand, Lexington is in, as in the arenafootball2 playoffs.

On the other hand, Lexington is likely out, as in hosting a first-round playoff game the weekend of Aug. 1-3.

On the one hand, a Quad City win over the visiting Horsemen in Thursday night's regular-season finale would put the Steamwheelers in the playoffs.

On the other hand, the Steamwheelers will miss out on the playoffs with a loss and a Louisville Fire victory over Peoria on Saturday.

The energy, excitement and good vibes vacated Rupp Arena Friday night when Alison Krauss and Robert Plant left the building.

On Saturday night, the Lexington Horsemen reported for duty with a lack of energy. The excitement of a playoff team playing its last regular-season home game was missing.

And the visiting Iowa Barnstormers, 5-9 coming in, clutched whatever good vibes were still around with a 54-44 victory in front of 3,585 fans.

Lexington (9-6) fell a game behind Green Bay in arenafootball2's Midwest Division. The loss could cost the Horsemen a first-round home game because they held the tiebreaker with the Blizzard.

John Cooper just turned 31 and knows his playing days are numbered, but he continues his drive for championships.

Cooper has been playing for titles most of his life, with Marshall University in college and with the Lexington Horsemen in arena football.

A 6-foot-5 wide receiver with speed and savvy, Cooper grabbed the touchdown pass and two-point conversion that put the Horsemen in the playoffs in their first season of arenafootball2.

Lexington tied Green Bay in the Midwest Division and swept the season series with the Blizzard after a 55-54 overtime victory last week. Quarterback Eddie Eviston was 19-of-20 passing in the second half after the Horsemen trailed by 20 points at the break.

When Jamus Martin played for Marshall University earlier in this decade, the Thundering Herd's motto was .The Ring was the Thing..

Martin, an all-conference performer, got three rings in his four years at Marshall. .That's not bad,. he said.

Another championship ring might be in Martin's future as a member of the Lexington Horsemen, who have designs on the arenafootball2 post-season.

Tenth-ranked Lexington (8-5) will face the division-leading and playoff-bound Green Bay Blizzard (9-4) at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Rupp Arena. A victory would put the Horsemen in a first-place tie with two games left. They would have the tiebreaker with the sixth-ranked Blizzard thanks to a 49-48 last-second victory on May 16.

LOUISVILLE — One yard was all the Lexington Horsemen needed to keep the ball, probably run out the clock and slip past the Louisville Fire.

But the Fire's Bernard Jackson got to Horseman quarterback Eddie Eviston and forced a fumble which was recovered by teammate Jerome Jones, giving the Fire 40 seconds to win the game.

That's a lifetime in arenafootball2, and Fire quarterback Matt Bassuener found Tymere Zimmerman in the back of the end zone for a 7-yard touchdown with 16 seconds left.

The Fire emerged with a 54-50 victory in a burgeoning rivalry in af2 between the Kentucky teams Monday night in Freedom Hall.

The one yard Lexington needed was a positive gain that would keep the clock running under af2 rules. If Eviston had retained possession, the Horsemen would have faced fourth down, but likely could have run out the clock.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. . Tennessee Valley never trailed Friday on the way to a 64-48 win over the Horsemen.

Lexington was playing without standout quarterback Eddie Eviston for the first time this season. QB Ryan Mitch went 16-for-27 for 245 yards with five touchdown passes. Mitch was sacked seven times in the game.

.I thought we played with great effort tonight,. Horsemen Coach Mike Harmon said. .We had some miscommunication in the secondary tonight ... We have a lot of new guys playing together, but we aren't going to make any excuses. Our guys played hard. I think Ryan is going to be a special player and he proved that tonight..

Mitch also was the team's leading rusher with four carries for 18 yards. Wide receiver John Cooper had six catches for 112 yards with three touchdowns, while Jarrod Rouanzoin had three grabs for 60 yards with a score.
