Rich Brooks not only enters fall practice without a definite successor for Andre Woodson at quarterback.
The Kentucky coach said Thursday he has no firm timetable in mind for when he will pick between Curtis Pulley and Mike Hartline.
”When it feels right, we'll make that decision,“ Brooks said at the University Club of Kentucky golf course.
As part of the annual Governor's Cup luncheon/golf tournament, both Brooks and Louisville Coach Steve Kragthorpe held brief news conferences to preview the Aug. 31 intrastate rivalry.
The Kentucky coach said he believes both Pulley, a junior from Hopkinsville, and Hartline, a sophomore from Canton, Ohio, can be winning quarterbacks.
”I thought they both played well in the Blue-White Game,“ Brooks said. ”I feel good about both of them.“
Having won 13 of his final 19 starts, Woodson left Lexington as one of the most accomplished quarterbacks in Kentucky history. He is the school's second all-time leading passer (9,360 yards) and the record holder for most career touchdown passes (79).
On the downside, he did have a penchant for holding the ball too long in the pocket and taking sacks (Kentucky allowed 38 last year).
Either Pulley or Hartline should allow UK to cut down on negative running plays from the QB position, Brooks said.
”I'm confident that position won't have as many sacks,“ the Kentucky coach said. ”What we need to do is make sure we don't have a big increase on the interception end from that position.“
Brooks said making the fewest mistakes could be the determining factor in the starting quarterback decision.
Whether it's Pulley or Hartline who ultimately emerges, Brooks said Kentucky's offense will not be radically different.
”We might call a few more quarterback runs if Curtis is the guy,“ Brooks said. ”But the overall (offensive) package is the same. The emphasis might be a little different.“
■ As expected, there is no pending quarterback competition at Louisville. Kragthorpe said senior Hunter Cantwell ”will take the first snap against Kentucky.“
■ As part of the Governor's Cup Luncheon, a past playing great from each school is recognized. Former Kentucky quarterback Derrick Ramsey and ex-Louisville offensive lineman Joe Jacoby were the duo saluted this year.
Also recognized were former Kentucky athletics director C.M. Newton and ex-Louisville coach (and UK player and assistant) Howard Schnellenberger for their roles in getting the UK-U of L football series relaunched in 1994.
■ Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear and former UK head coaches Fran Curci and Guy Morriss were also in attendance.
■ Proceeds from the event go to the Visually Impaired Pre-School Services, an agency that benefits young children who are blind or have sight impairment.
