Church plans celebration

- jniemi@herald-leader.com

Annunciation Catholic Church in Paris is planning a week of activities to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the laying of its cornerstone.

The stone was laid Aug. 1, 1858, and construction was completed three years later. The church at 1010 High Street was dedicated under the patronage of ”the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary“ on Aug. 25, 1861, the church said in a statement.

An organ and choral program kicks off activities at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Guest artists include the Bishop's Choir from the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption in Covington. An open house and reception follow.

A ”Living Rosary“ is scheduled for Monday, and an evening Mass will be held Tuesday, with a cookout afterward.

On Wednesday, a pre-Vatican II Latin Mass will be offered at 7 p.m., with the Lexington Latin Mass Community Choir performing along with members of Lexington's St. Peter Catholic Church Choir.

Holyday Masses are scheduled for 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Friday.

Next Saturday, Mass will be offered at 5 p.m., and a sock hop and social gathering will be held after.

On Aug. 17, the Most Rev. Ronald W. Gainer, bishop of the Diocese of Lexington, will preside at the 10:30 a.m. Mass, along with the Rev. John C. Curtis, pastor at Annunciation. The parish picnic will then be held at Hunterton Farm on North Middletown Road. The week concludes with a 6 p.m. evening prayer service at Mount Olivet Cemetery on West 19th Street.
