4 from region among top 5 in MathCounts

Ninety-six sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders from schools throughout Kentucky competed in the state MathCounts contest in Louisville. MathCounts is a national math program designed to develop and strengthen math, science, leadership and teamwork skills.

This is the 25th year for the competition, which was founded in 1983 by the National Society of Professional Engineers, CNA Insurance Company, and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

The top four students were awarded a full-tuition, four-year college scholarship to either the University of Kentucky or the University of Louisville. They each also won an expense-paid trip to the national contest in Denver.


Winners are:

2nd place: Yuki Inoue of Beaumont Middle School coached by Jerry Broyles

3rd place: Sadik Shahidain of Lexington Traditional Magnet School coached by Kristian Klaene and Keith Durham

4th place: Megan Hooven of Georgetown Middle School coached by Vicky Grant

5th place: Idrees Kahloon of Lexington Traditional Magnet School coached by Kristian Klaene and Keith Durham

6th place: Sreyas Rangaraju of Newburg Middle School coached by Jean Clayton

7th place: Douglas Yang of Meyzeek Middle School coached by Greg Moore

8th place: Nikolas Anderson of Lone Oak Middle School coached by Lisa Dukes

9th place: Ankush Gupta of Meyzeek Middle School coached by Greg Moore

10th place: Vinay Raj of Meyzeek Middle School coached by Greg Moore

Kristian Klaene, a teacher at Lexington Traditional Magnet School, will coach the Kentucky team at the national contest. His team of four students won the 1st place team position. The remaining top ten team winners (out of 17 competing teams) were:
